20 for ‘20
The Morehouse College Class of 2020 is experiencing a final school year unlike any other in modern history.
The Morehouse College Office of External Relations and Alumni Engagement felt that one way to supporting our 2020 grads was to offer congratulatory messages by creating and submitting ‘20 for ‘20’ (at least 20 words of congratulations for the Class of 2020).
In June the request emails went out and the response from parents, friends, family, faculty, staff and alumni was amazing.
Responses have been compiled below.
20 for ‘20 RESPONSES
“My Dear Morehouse Brothers,

“Your life is forever filled with profound blessings; fear is a temporary cloud beneath an eternal sun named fearlessness. You are that sun with crazy confidence. Be forever kind and gentle to yourself, honest and trustworthy. You are forever the king of your own domain, an elegant indestructible sacred diamond with cheerfulness and humor.”
- Edward Ward ‘80, Milwaukee, WI
“David R. Holder,
Congratulations! I’m so proud of you. I’ve watched you grow from a little boy to a Morehouse Man. My family and I are so happy for you. May God continue to bless and guide you through the next phase of your life’s journey.”

“When you were formed in your mother’s womb, it was for days like this. When you pursued everything that prepared you to apply to Morehouse, it was for days like this. When you applied to Morehouse, when Morehouse chose you and when you chose Morehouse, it was for days like this. Now, former Men of Morehouse who are now officially Morehouse Men, 2020 was not randomly chosen by God to disrupt your plans, your life, your future, your destiny. No, it was for days like this, apocalyptic days like this, revealing days like this, uncovering days like this that God is weaving into an unimaginable narrative of individual lives melded together in a complex but beautiful mosaic of men who wake up every day daring life to bring it’s biggest and best challenges their way because the nave, the crucible, the womb of Mother Morehouse has lovingly nurtured and birthed another class, another generation of Morehouse Men for days like this. Morehouse Men of the class of 2020, always remember these days, when your heights and achievements are scaled, awards and honors have been received, and titles and degrees have been conferred because you were made for days like this. Morehouse Men of the class of 2020, God picked this season just for you to participate in the bringing forth of radically different global leadership and progress and therefore do not dwell on or revel in regrets in days like this. Morehouse Men of the class of 2020, your future, whatever you choose to make it, will be because of, not in spite of, days like this.”

“Jahine M. Grady and the Class of 2020, Congratulations Morehouse Men !!!!!!!!
As a young man moves through life he approaches obstacles that will test his character, fortitude, honor and courage. As a father watching you through this period, it has brought me unbelievable pride. Jahine M. Grady you are about to continue a legacy of men that have made a difference in this world. Find your place for your contribution is truly needed.
Son, a father is filled with joy on the day his name is carried forward but he is overcome with pride when that son becomes the man he always prayed he'd become. Your mother and I are very much aware of how hard you have worked for this day and the sense of accomplishment it must bring you. Futhermore, the countless hours you sacrificed in your personal quest for knowledge. Continue your hunger. Continue your path. Remember your journey is just beginning.
But on this day, you can never imagine the joy, love and overwhelming pride this brings your family. So thank you so very much son for your dream of becoming a Morehouse Man. My father's name is in great care. I am honored Mr. Grady.”

“I look forward with great enthusiasm to next year’s graduating class of 2021, because that is my son, Parker Broadnax's graduating class. However I find this years class of 2020 equally as important and enthusiastic to me.
You have witnessed going from one graduation extreme to another. Meaning..the class of 2019's extraordinary highs because all of it's student loan debt was paid by a caring, generous Billionaire name Mr. Robert Smith. Then the very next year, your year, this year, a brutally deadly Pandemic enveloped the planet. Killing people by the hundreds of thousands. Changing life as we know it, seemingly over night. Everything we once did mindlessly is now either no longer doable or must be done with the utmost protection. While still having a percentage of risk.
Having a graduation ceremony for you young men and others, like my daughter,
Logan Broadnax who is a high school senior, was/is simply not worth the risk. You young people are truly our future, as cliche as it may sound, it is without a doubt who you are...The Future! And we need each and everyone of you. Standing tall, being proud and 100% accounted for.
You will graduate. You will become not just Morehouse Men, but the historic Morehouse Men of 2020. The year the world changed. Unlike any other year or class in the history of this fine globally respected institution. With your degrees in your hands, firmly grab hold of this situation and turn it into a success story. Just as these four years at Morehouse College taught you to. Show my sons class of 2021 and all the classes moving forward that A Morehouse Man is a Man unstoppable!
Peace and Love young warriors.

Proud dad of a Man In The House.

“Do thy duty; that is best: Leave unto thy Lord the rest." In this year of perfect vision (20/20) we can easily get blinded by the doubt and uncertainty, but remain steadfast in all that Morehouse has taught you and rejoice in the vision and clarity that God is providing to each of you in this pandemic season. Yours is a lesson that challenges you to be great, because the world needs greatness right now. Yours also is a lesson of justice, for this season has brought into clear focus just how unbalanced the equities are. Yours is also a lesson of spiritual strength, because you have been shown that GOD remains in control. It is time for you to seize the day and engineer a society that is better. Remember you are either a "social engineer" or a "parasite on society." -Charles Hamilton Houston.

“4 years ago, you each embarked on your college journey as Men of Morehouse, Class of 2020. Your class was dubbed the "Class of Perfect Vision." You could not have known then, that you would be the foundation for change following a public health crisis, but here you are and not by accident. As you transition from "Men of Morehouse" to "Morehouse Men" know that your imagination is not limited by earthly circumstance. You are the Class of Perfect Vision because you each have an ability to see, perfectly, the world as it should be, not as it is; to reflect on the last 4 years because hindsight is 2020; and to charge forward, confidently, with the tools to manifest new realities and positively impact the masses. You were chosen to be a part of the graduating Class of 2020 because you have Perfect Vision.

“To my Morehouse brother, approaching the mantle of being a Morehouse Man,
You have been dealt a strange hand of cards. This is, by far, one of the most complex ways one can end a Morehouse-undergraduate journey. However, your journey has only begun. I hope you cherished the time you had on campus; you will not know how much of an anomalous blessing it was until it is gone. I hope you are emerging from Morehouse's gates with at least two friends you will cherish for a lifetime. I hope you received a few nuggets from our esteemed faculty outside of classroom instruction (all the real gold is in office hours), and I hope you look at the things you overcame in the last four years with more smiles than tears.
This is where your preliminary training ends. You will have a sword known as your Morehouse degree, and you have a shield, which is your Morehouse lessons (those are two very different things). Take both, and in every decision you make, remember the community, the legacy, and the rich history that comes before you. When you feel inadequate, remember all of the unlikely stories that made it with that Morehouse insignia. When you feel like your intelligence is questioned, remember all the professors, like myself, that began their intellectual journey as you did. When you see injustice, remember how your older brothers faced it: with a sense of obligation. When you feel alone, remember the story of the bell outside of Sale Hall, and the story of how Morehouse brothers defended each other from KKK raids.
Here is where you make a difference, big or small. Whatever you do, do it with the "finish" of a Morehouse Man. Keep your faith close to you, no matter what it is in. Approach the world like you deserve everything you are willing to work for. Forgive yourself for anything you do that falls short to your standard, and use those moments as a springboard toward "better." Do not settle, do not become complacent, and do not allow the word curses of others to stop you from your vocation. Redefine what it means to be an American (Black) man, for the sons you will not father directly. Congratulations! You are now ready for the war that awaits you. You're ready for it, you're never alone, you are enough, and you will do exceptionally well.

As Morehouse Men have been trained to be leaders and free thinkers. This is your opportunity to turn lemons into lemonade. Take this extra time to determine what are the current needs in our society and how you can accommodate them with a service, a product or a solution. You are built and trained for great things. We, the alumni, look forward to you carrying the candle even further.”
- Mark Ross ‘90, Snellville, GA
“Hey Class of ‘20, I share many feelings of frustration in not celebrating graduation the Morehouse way this year. I like you was looking forward to leading your processional as a “Golden Tiger”, fifty years after my graduation. In the traditions of the House you are transitioning to the exalted status of a Morehouse Man . Your journey begins with the recognition that the obligations that you are expected to fulfill start with being true to yourself and to your alma mater. Expectations of you from your community, both professional and general, will only be exceeded by your identification as a Morehouse Man. Remember the saying of Dr. Mays..” Sin in life is not fulfilling your dreams, it is a sin to have no dreams to fulfill! Go forward good Men!”

Your 2nd great-grandfather walked the yard back in 1917, your great-grandfather in the 40’s and now you renew the legacy for a new generation! Morehouse has been transformative!
We noticed something different on the 1st visit back home. Were you more confident? No… you always had a swagger. Better dressed? Sure. Well-traveled? Absolutely, but what I am particularly proud of is the work in service of others. Morehouse was launching pad and there is so much more in store!

Class of 2020 you are forging through an adversity unseen by most classes of Morehouse men. Keep going, keep building that iron clad character that will serve you and the rest of the world well for decades to come.
You will be the military, political, artistic and medical leaders that this world will rely on going forward. Know that much will be on your shoulders, yet you will have our shoulders to prop you up.

“First of all, congratulations on your graduation from Morehouse, during one of our most challenging times ever—during the Coronavirus pandemic! As a 1970 graduate, our most challenging event was being drafted to serve in the military during the Vietnam War. If one were to look back at other classes, most, could identify their challenges as well. Having graduated from Morehouse 50 years ago and, being a Black man with a wife and two children, I am happy to say that all of my challenges were overcome. The constant that kept me striving and achieving were the “Ideals of Morehouse College.” This is a mind set-KEEP IT, and you will achieve all that you strive for.
Wishing you much success in your life,
Nathaniel G. Davis”

“To our son Dashaun Thomas and the rest of the class of 2020, we salute you for your dedication, perseverance and commitment! We love and pray for you all and couldn’t be prouder!! Love Nolene and Joseph Casimir”
- Nolene Casimir, New York, NY - Parent of senior Dashaun Thomas ‘20

“Congratulations, Gentlemen. You made it! You have achieved your goal and earned the right to wear the crown. But as you see all around you on a daily basis, the work doesn't end here. You have just cleared the launchpad. We, as a society, now need for you to fix your gaze on your next personal goal and continue on your journey to success--however you define it. But whatever the goals, pursue excellence and let your goals be worthy of approval by your forefathers and foremothers, and those of us who comprise Dear Old Morehouse. We will be with you the entire journey.
So don't worry about having a nontraditional senior year or a delayed commencement ceremony. You have arrived, nonetheless. Be proud of your accomplishment as we are proud of you. Onward and upward at God's speed.
Congratulations Morehouse Men!”
- Eric Register ‘93, Mableton, GA
“Morehouse College, formed when African American men couldn’t attend most institutions of higher learning, has proven countless times that betting against Morehouse Men is a fool’s errand. When all is said and done, the Class of 2020 will be one of our foremost examples.
”While I regret that you won’t spend your last semester taking your victory lap around 830 Westview Drive, I shudder at the thought of what the Class of 2020 will achieve with the perspective and drive you will have gained through his crisis.
”Remember: you’re built for this and we’re all behind you. Et Facta Est Lux.”
- Jason Smith Spears ‘04, Washington, DC
"When I was a freshman at Morehouse in 1979, there was this moment during freshmen orientation week where we were assembled into the auditorium in Sale Hall. Amongst the many words that were shared with us that day by faculty, administrators and upperclassmen, the following were the words that I remember most: “Look to your left, look to your right, because the brother sitting next to you may not be here next year.” Assuming those words were still uttered during your freshman orientation week, they probably don’t hold the same relevancy that they may have when you first entered these hallowed walls. After all, you are soon to have a future comprised of a degree in your hand. For this, I congratulate you for work well done. I am hoping, however, that these following words will have some importance, as I would ask you to now figuratively do this: “Look to your left, look to your right, because the brother sitting next to you may play a pivotal part in your life in the future, as they may have in these past few years. Some of those brothers may be amongst those you turn to for a shoulder on which to cry or for advice from which to obtain; any one of them might be the one to introduce you to your spouse; or, as what literally happened to me, one of them might play a role in helping you secure a job or promotion.”
Similarly, I encourage you to be the source of kindness to fellow alumni, as you may be one of the few people with which he has a strong connection. The men with which you bonded these past years are the same men with which you can continue bonding but only if you take the time to nurture those relationships by making those phone calls, sending those emails, and/or visiting. You have, no doubt, had many wonderful experiences these past 4 or so years, but remember that there are many more experiences to have and there’s no reason to have those experiences without some of the friendships that you forged at Morehouse. In fact, your lives will likely be more meaningful and rewarding with some of those same people by your sides.”
- Louis Jones ‘83, Detroit, MI

- Willie "Joey" Hill, III ‘04, Los Angeles, CA
"Congratulations Class of 2020! You may not get to hear Dean Lawrence Edward Carter, Sr.’s final words at Commencement but be reminded of two quotations he may have said. The first one is from Howard Thurman: “Never let God repent for having created you.” The second one might have been from the Apostle Paul and often quoted by Benjamin E. Mays, “You shall reap what you sow.”
- Echol Nix, Jr., Ph.D. ‘95, Orangeburg, SC

“To the newest Morehouse men and my brothers of the class of 2020…In twenty years, you will look back at this moment of challenge, chaos, and uncertainty as a moment of preparation. The lessons you learn will be enduring and will shape the lives that each of you will lead as leaders in your chosen field. Yes leaders...we need you today and will need you for the next 20 years and beyond. Our foremothers and fathers sacrificed and paid the price for the progress that we are blessed to exist in today. It is our hope that you will do the same for the women and men that follow you...that is, pave the path through the conditions we face today and into a brighter future. And they will do the same. Congratulations Class of 2020!!!”

- Demond Kennedy ‘00, Stockbridge, GA
“Class of 2020, we tend to respond to the question on how things are going as either “good” or “bad” however, throughout my experiences, I’ve come to the conclusion that these experiences are all part of life therefore my response is always “Life is life.”
While I can only imagine how it feels to have your senior year spring semester completely altered, I can emphatically say that this experience will have the ability to create legendary Morehouse Men. You sill be better because of this.”
- Torian Robinson ‘04, Atlanta, GA

"Morehouse Men, look at these trying times as an opportunity and not as a crisis. I too faced an uncertain economy when I graduated in May 2001 just as the dotcom market crashed. I was to start my training for work on September 11, 2001 just 1 block from the World Trade Towers but had my offer furloughed for a year. I had just missed one of the biggest calamities in the country and thanked GOD despite sleeping on an air mattress for three months with no job on horizon for another year.
Later in my professional career, I started a commercial real estate brokerage on August 8, 2008 just a few months before Lehman brothers tumbled and the bottom fell out of the world via the subprime mortgage crisis. Looking back on it this was the absolute best time to start a business since not only was I not closing any deals for 6 months...neither were my competitors.
These next months will present opportunities to be bold and seize opportunities created by needs and gaps in the marketplace. Be fearless, Be Bold, Be Leaders young Morehouse Men.

Best wishes Class of 2020, I look forward to working with you all to change the world.”
- M-T Strickland ‘08, Lilburn, GA
“In the words of Dr. Benjamin Mays at my graduation in 1967 "If the Morehouse graduates, on the whole, have done better than the graduates of most predominantly Negro colleges, it is due in part to the philosophy drilled into them that the Morehouse Man can succeed in the world despite crippling circumstances under which he has had to live." 2020 represents such a challenge and you will do as Morehouse graduates before you have done— you will succeed. Leben Sie Wohl!”
- William Henderson ‘67, Addison, TX

"When you selected Morehouse College to pursue you education, I am sure you envisioned a number of experiences ahead of you ranging from academics, friendships, socializing and graduation to name a few. Never would you have ever imagined the backdrop for your final semester at Dear Old Morehouse would play out against a national pandemic. This is not the experience that you, your parents or loved ones have wished for you. For many of you, this is not your first unplanned disruption along your college journey. Some of you have lost loved ones along the way, dealt with financial challenges that may have delayed your completion or personally experienced acts of violence. Through it all, each of you have accepted the challenge(s) Morehouse has presented and you have risen to the occasion every single time. Although this COVID-19 Pandemic is significant, it will remain just another unplanned challenge that each of you will once again side to the occasion to overcome. I pray that each of you and your families find unique ways to celebrate you achieving the completion of your degree at Morehouse this spring. Every one of you is amazing and exceptional in your own right and you deserve all the success life has in store for you. God bless and stay strong young men, STAY STRONG!”
